Sevastopol has been famed in lyrics and poems, in novels and plays in many languages. It is like a song of noble deeds, of the human spirit beauty. Every inch of the sacred soil of this city has been wetted by the blood of Russian soldiers. Sevastopol has long been a symbol of Russia's military glory. The name Sevastopol is of the Greek origin. «Majestic, sacred city» is its meaning.

The history and development of the city is in many ways associated with the sea and Russian Navy. During its relatively short period of existence it was twice burnt down, razed to the ground by the fire of wars, and twice it rose from the ashes, just like the immortal bird Phoenix.

Sevastopol, now the chief naval harbor of Ukraine (it was ceded to Ukraine by Russia in 1954), lies on a picturesque bay and was laid out in 1783 on the site of the Tartar village of Akhtiar. Sevastopol harbor is considered the best on the Black Sea.

The city is especially memorable for the great siege of 1854-1855 (the Crimean War) and the heroic defense during World War II. Though, then, almost totally destroyed, it quickly recovered and now has a population of 416,000 people.

There are a lot of attractions for tourists in Sevastopol. Being not very old itself, Sevastopol has the imposing ruins of the antique city of Chersonessus on its territory. Chersonessus dates back to the 5th century B.C., when the Greeks began to settle the coast of the Black Sea. Chersonessus was listed by UNESCO as one of the top 100 most unique archeological sites in the world. Now it is just like a piece of ancient Greece on the territory of the city («Crimean Pompei»).

The city of Sevastopol, with lots of museums and monuments, with caressing sea and shady parks, numerous new buildings (most of them are made of white limestone) and broad streets has a pleasant appearance. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Ukraine. Its neatly planned down-town areas and residential districts provide the city with quite a modern skyline.
